Nick Clegg Holds First Meeting of Mental Health Taskforce
Tuesday 16 December, 2014
Deputy Prime Minister and Leader of the Liberal Democrats Nick Clegg chaired his first Mental Health Task Force meeting this afternoon with Ministers from across the coalition.
The Mental Health Taskforce was set up by Nick Clegg in order to combine Government’s efforts and pool its resources to help the millions of people whose mental health condition is preventing them from getting on in life.
Welfare and employment, the criminal justice system, and services for children and young people were the focus of todays meeting, and the ministers will meet again in the new year to discuss specific proposals.
The Liberal Democrats are committed to bringing treatment for mental health problems out of the shadows and in line with physical health.
Nick Clegg said:
“Millions of people suffer every day with mental health problems but many are simply not getting the treatment and support they need to get on in life.
“I’ve been pushing hard in Government to transform mental health services, securing millions of pounds of investment to help create a fairer society where people get the help they need, when they need it.
“But we need to go further and faster and that’s why I’ve set up this dedicated taskforce. This is a major leap forward for mental health where ministers from across government are working together to give people the help and support they need wherever they might need it – at school, at work, or in the NHS.”
